Biography

Aaron Perry Johnson was six when his parents signed him up at the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, the Buckinghamshire town where he was born on 13 June 1990. Tap, singing and acrobatics came before acting. He left school at fifteen to do the job full time, the son of a civil engineer and a mother who took odd jobs to keep the household going. Three decades on, he's one of the handful of names that surfaces every time somebody says the words "next James Bond".

From a London 'Macbeth' to John Lennon

His first proper job, back in 1999, was on stage: Macduff's son in a London production of 'Macbeth' opposite Rufus Sewell. Small parts in British film and television followed, among them Prosper in 'The Thief Lord' (2006), the young Eisenheim in 'The Illusionist' (2006) and the good-looking sixth-former in 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' (2008).

The real jump was 'Nowhere Boy' (2009), playing a teenage John Lennon in pre-Beatles Liverpool. It won him the Empire Award for Best Newcomer and a British Independent Film Award nomination. It also rearranged his private life, though we'll get to that.

Kick-Ass, Marvel and a Golden Globe

A year later he was zipped into the green and yellow wetsuit of 'Kick-Ass' (2010), Matthew Vaughn's foul-mouthed comic adaptation, sharing the screen with a thirteen-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz. He came back for 'Kick-Ass 2' (2013).

In between he was the hotel handyman in 'Albert Nobbs' (2011), Keira Knightley's lover in Joe Wright's 'Anna Karenina' (2012) and one half of the dealer duo in Oliver Stone's 'Savages' (2012). Hollywood handed him the big budgets with 'Godzilla' (2014) and with Quicksilver, who turned up in the post-credits sting of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014) before dying in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (2015), alongside Elizabeth Olsen.

His best work sits somewhere much darker. In 'Nocturnal Animals' (2016), the second and so far final film directed by Tom Ford, he built Ray Marcus out of a thin moustache, a nervous laugh and a stretch of empty Texas road. It won him the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA nomination. The Academy left him off its list entirely, which almost never happens to a winner in that category.

A CV worth four billion dollars

Since then he's moved between auteur cinema and blockbusters with a freedom few British actors of his age have managed. He shot 'Outlaw King' (2018) and led 'A Million Little Pieces' (2018), the James Frey memoir his wife directed and the pair of them co-wrote. He played Ives for Christopher Nolan in 'Tenet' (2020), Archie Reid in 'The King's Man' (2021) and one of the two assassins scrapping with Brad Pitt in 'Bullet Train' (2022).

Then came the insufferable action star Ryan Gosling doubles for in 'The Fall Guy' (2024). Not everything has landed. 'Kraven the Hunter' (2024), his shot at fronting a franchise inside Sony's Spider-Man universe, went down badly with critics and audiences alike. The same year treated him far better as the sceptical Friedrich Harding in 'Nosferatu', and then came '28 Years Later' (2025), where Danny Boyle cast him as Jamie, raising a son on a quarantined Lindisfarne opposite Jodie Comer. Add up every film he's appeared in and the total sits just under four billion dollars worldwide.

The farm in Somerset

He met the director and artist Sam Taylor-Wood in 2008, auditioning for 'Nowhere Boy'. He was eighteen, she was forty-one. They started seeing each other once filming wrapped, got engaged in October 2009 and married on 21 June 2012 in the chapel at Babington House. Both took the same new surname, which is why she has worked as Sam Taylor-Johnson ever since. The twenty-three-year age gap has kept the British press busy for fifteen years, and he tends to answer the questions without much fuss.

They have two daughters, Wylda Rae (2010) and Romy Hero (2012), and he's stepfather to Sam's two older girls. Home is a farm near Bruton, in Somerset, with pigs, cows, chickens and dogs, a place he once compared to Noah's Ark. When the girls were small he turned work down for long stretches, by choice.

What's next looks characteristically split between the commercial and the peculiar. 'Fuze', David Mackenzie's thriller about an unexploded wartime bomb under central London, reached UK cinemas in April 2026, and December brings 'Werwulf', the lycanthropy story Robert Eggers has shot entirely in Middle English. After that sit 'Blood on Snow', a Cary Fukunaga thriller with Benedict Cumberbatch, and 'Cry to Heaven'. As for 007, nobody has said anything official yet.
