Plot

Emerald Fennell, known for her cinematic boldness, presents a version of Wuthering Heights that has ignited controversy since its announcement. Far from the classic adaptations of Emily Brontë's gothic novel, this reinterpretation proposes a radical and provocative approach, exploring the passions and conflicts of the characters with an erotic intensity that has surprised both the audience and critics. Starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, the film reimagines the original story, transforming the bleak landscapes and tumultuous relationships of the characters into a setting where provocation and sensuality take center stage.

A tale charged with desire and tension, generating comparisons with contemporary erotic sagas and sparking a debate about the limits of literary adaptation. The film presents itself as an exercise in narrative and visual deconstruction, where the love and revenge story between Heathcliff and Catherine is wrapped in an intense and modern aesthetic, capable of confronting the viewer with the darkest dimensions of human passion.

It is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year, promising to reignite the conversation about literary adaptation and contemporary cinema. Fennell's work not only challenges tradition but also invites a dialogue on how classics can be reinterpreted in a contemporary key, exploring the limits of narrative, desire, and artistic transgression.

Trivia

Jacob Elordi

When the cast was announced, many were disappointed with Jacob Elordi's casting, claiming that Heathcliff is not white in the novel. Many also felt it was even more disappointing after the last adaptation, Cumbres borrascosas (2011), had portrayed Heathcliff as non-white in the movie - played by men of color. However, Emily Brontë's novel remains vague of Heathcliff's ancestry, describing him alternately as a "dark-skinned gipsy (sic)" with "black eyes", and "as white as the wall behind him" and even "pale". Some characters hint at a possible Mediterranean or (Latin) American heritage. Although Elordi is from Australia, his paternal family comes from the Basque region in Spain.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie's first collaboration with director Emerald Fennell as an actress. She previously produced Fennell's first two feature films, Una joven prometedora (2020) and Saltburn (2023). They also co-starred in Barbie (2023).

Saltburn

Alison Oliver and Jacob Elordi played siblings in Fennell's previous feature, Saltburn (2023).
