Plot
'Yunan' tells the story of Munir, an Arab writer in exile, living in Hamburg. Here, desperate, depressed and wanting to end his life, he decides to travel to an island in the North Sea. It is there that he meets Valeska, an enigmatic woman, and her son, Karl, a rough and rude young man, but extremely loyal. The relationship between Munir and the inhabitants of this island begins without words, discreetly, but between these three characters certain gestures, complicities and a friendly rapport begin to develop, which will serve to dismantle the mutual distrust they feel at the beginning. Munir will see how the burden he was carrying is gradually lifted and, with it, his will to live reappears.
'Yunan' is directed and written by the young Ukrainian filmmaker Ameer Fakher Eldin. This is his second film, after “The Stranger”, a co-production between Palestine, Syria, Qatar and Germany. In this case, “Yunan” is once again a co-production between several countries: Germany, Canada, Italy, Palestine, Qatar and Jordan.
Georges Khabbaz and Hanna Schygulla bring Munir and Valeska to life, respectively, accompanied by other actors such as Tom Wlaschiha, Sibel Kekilli, Ali Suliman, Nidal Al-Askhar, Bernd Gajkowski, Laura Sophia Landauer and Michael Weber, who complete the cast.
'Yunan' has been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. It will be released in cinemas on 30 January 2026.
