Zafari

In a small zoo lost among the remnants of a crumbling city, the neighbors—divided by ancient social classes but united by scarcity—celebrate the arrival of Zafari, a huge hippopotamus that becomes a symbol of abundance and hope. From the top floor of a once-luxurious building now in decline, Ana, Edgar, and their son Bruno observe the scene as if looking at a memory from another time. The zoo, which was once a place of recreation, is now a precarious refuge where animals survive better than humans.

The city suffers constant power and water outages, the supermarkets are empty, and fear spreads through the dark hallways of the building. Driven by necessity, Ana searches the abandoned apartments for scraps of food, while Edgar tries to keep the idea of escape alive. But every open door reveals more signs of abandonment… and something else: unsettling sounds, footsteps, breaths that do not belong to anyone visible.

As desperation grows, the boundary between the human and the animal blurs. The neighbors confront each other, bodies merge with shadows, and violence becomes a form of survival. Amidst this chaos, Zafari—the hippopotamus from the zoo—is the only being that seems to have everything it needs: water, food, strength. Its figure becomes an obsession, a myth, and a threat.

Between hunger, confinement, and madness, Ana realizes that they are not only trying to escape the city, but from a nature that claims its territory. Because in this new wild world, the beast is no longer behind bars.
