The end of 2016 is just round the corner, and with that comes the final rankings of the best films and TV series from the last 12 months. This time around, IMDb have revealed a list of the most popular television series amongst its users.
The truth is there aren't many surprise appearances in the list. The top series that appear in the rankings are those that have generated the most interest, and there are a fair few that have kept the public talking and watching on throughout 2016. Ranging from the extremely popular and renowned 'Game of Thrones' to some of the newer arrivals such as 'Stranger Things'.
Keith Simanton, one of the senior film editors for IMDb has commented on the popularity of these two series. He explained that "for the fifth consecutive year, HBO's 'Game of Thrones' claimed the top spot on IMDb's list of Top 10 TV Shows of the year. 'Game of Thrones' has demonstrated unparalleled and enduring popularity over the last five years. Not surprisingly, its lead actors are beloved as well. Emilia Clarke, for example, is IMDb's is number two in the Top Star rankings of 2016, a spot she also occupied in 2015."
'Stranger Things', welcome to the big time
The new Netflix series caught everyones attention when it was released in the summer, so much so that Simanton claimed "it became an instant success between users". In fact, two of the youngest actresses in the series (Millie Bobby Brown and Natalia Dyer) have made it onto the list of newest stars of the year. Another drama that has been released this year, and has made it into the top 10 is 'Westworld', HBO's newest hit. The rest of the list includes other dramas such as 'The Walking Dead' and 'Orange Is the New Black'.
