Doctor Portuondo

'Doctor Portuondo' is a Spanish series with a very personal look at mental health, therapy, and contemporary neuroses. It premiered as the first original production of the streaming platform Filmin under its Filmin Original label. It is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name written by Carlo Padial. The series sits at the intersection of comedy, drama, and introspective satire. It has a single season of six episodes that premiered on Filmin on October 29, 2021.

The plot revolves around the relationship between a young neurotic who struggles to face his everyday problems and his peculiar therapist, Doctor Portuondo, an eccentric Cuban psychoanalyst who shouts at his patients, swears by Freud, and never loses his glass of Johnny Walker whisky. 

As therapy progresses, the dynamic between the two evolves, revealing whims of the mind, life paradoxes, and the protagonist's own contradictions, whose life seems to worsen as he delves deeper into emotional analysis.

The cast is led by Jorge Perugorría and Nacho Sánchez. Other cast members include Olivia Delcán, Berto Romero, David Pareja, Elisabet Casanovas, Judit Martí, Llimoo.

It had a very notable impact for Filmin as an independent platform, becoming its most-watched series in the first three days of release with one of the best premiere figures of 2021 within the catalog, only behind highlighted titles from the platform itself.

'Doctor Portuondo' stands out for its ability to speak with intelligent humor about mental health, psychoanalysis, and the emotional life of a generation dealing with personal and collective uncertainties, which places a small Spanish production at the center of the conversation about how series can address deep themes without giving up comedy and irony.
