La catedral del mar

Based on the successful novel of the same name by Ildefonso Falcones, 'The Cathedral of the Sea' is a historical series that transports the viewer to the heart of 14th century Barcelona, a time when social classes were very rigid and the possibility of fluctuating between them was unthinkable. At that moment, the city is in full economic prosperity, which means it is constantly growing. La Ribera, the fishermen's neighborhood, is its new limit. It will be there that they try to build the largest temple to date, which will be the cathedral of Santa María de la Mar. 

In this context, Arnau, the protagonist, who has managed to escape life as a serf and has fled to Barcelona in search of becoming a full citizen, will move. Working tirelessly, he will achieve a privileged position. However, this will unleash the envy of his peers, making him the target of a conspiracy.

Arnau, played by Aitor Luna, faces family betrayals, class conflicts, and personal tragedies, while his determination makes him a central character who embodies the struggle for dignity in an unforgiving world. Alongside him are characters like Mar Estanyol (Michelle Jenner), whose strength and sensitivity add emotional depth, and supporting characters that enrich the complex medieval society portrayed.

Directed by Jordi Frades and produced by Atresmedia and Diagonal TV, The Cathedral of the Sea combines a careful historical recreation with an agile and cinematic narrative. Premiered in 2018, the series received praise for its historical accuracy, its powerful dramatic weight, and the performances of its cast, establishing itself as one of the most prominent historical dramas in recent Spanish television.
