The project was originally conceived as a stand-alone film starring Katherine Heigl as Claire Randall.

According to Ronald D. Moore, the showrunner, the team decided to keep the Gaelic words instead of translating them to English. This maintained the first person narrative by showing Claire's inability to understand the Gaelic.

Grant O'Rourke (Rupert) attended university with Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Laura Donelly (Jenny Fraser Murray) and all three knew each other at school.
