Grant O'Rourke (Rupert) attended university with Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) and Laura Donelly (Jenny Fraser Murray) and all three knew each other at school.

Author Diana Gabaldon has a cameo appearance in the episode 'The Gathering', playing Iona McTavish, who speaks to Mrs. Fitz (Annette Badland) as she escorts Claire to watch the oath taking ceremony.

The project was originally conceived as a stand-alone film starring Katherine Heigl as Claire Randall.
