William Devane and Rob Lowe, who play father and son, have both played President John F. Kennedy in made for TV movies 39 years apart, Devane in The Missiles of October (1974), and Lowe in Matar a Kennedy (2013).

An early plot in the series was to involve how Stewart's wife Debbie Sanderson was Dean's old girlfriend, but the idea was dropped after the pilot.

Joel, Lizzie's boyfriend, is played by John Owen Lowe, who is Rob Lowe's son.
