The Spanish Princess

'The Spanish Princess' is a historical drama and romance series that narrates the arrival of Catherine of Aragon at the English court and her rise to become queen, offering a perspective focused on power, identity, and political survival in 16th century Europe. 

It was created by Emma Frost and Matthew Graham and produced by Starz in collaboration with All3Media International, and is part of the trilogy of television adaptations based on the historical novels of Philippa Gregory, following 'The White Queen' and 'The White Princess'.

The story follows the young Catherine, princess of Spain and daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, who travels to England with the promise of marrying Prince Arthur and sealing an alliance between two powers. 

After the unexpected death of her husband, Catherine must fight to maintain her position in a court full of intrigues, betrayals, and ambitions, defending her legitimacy and her right to become the wife of the future Henry VIII. The series combines political drama with the personal portrait of a woman determined to control her destiny in an environment dominated by dynastic and religious interests.

The cast is led by Charlotte Hope as Catherine of Aragon and Ruairi O’Connor as Henry VIII. They are joined by Laura Carmichael, Stephanie Levi-John, Aaron Cobham, Georgie Henley, Alexandra Moen, Philip Cumbus, and Andrew Buchan.

It has two seasons, aired between 2019 and 2020. The series stood out for its meticulous setting, its costumes, and its attempt to offer a more active and strategic perspective of Catherine, trying to distance her from her traditional image as a passive figure in history. 

Its warm reception among fans of historical drama and the world of Philippa Gregory marked the public's interest in productions focused on the intrigues of the Tudor dynasty and the role of women in power.
