Biography

Emily Ratajkowski was born in Westminster, London, on 7 June 1991, to American parents who were teaching in England at the time. The family moved back to California when she was small and she grew up in Encinitas, north of San Diego. Ford Models signed her at fourteen. She started a degree at UCLA and left it almost immediately.

Everything after that has been an argument about who owns her picture.

'Blurred Lines'

A 2012 magazine cover led to music video work, and in 2013 she appeared in the video for 'Blurred Lines', the Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams single that spent twelve consecutive weeks at number one in the United States. It made her famous within days and attached a label to her that took a decade to shift.

She gave a different account of it years later, writing that Thicke had groped her during the shoot. The video's director, Diane Martel, confirmed the incident and said he apologised afterwards. Thicke has never publicly responded.

The fame turned her into a proper fashion fixture rather than a novelty. She made her runway debut for Marc Jacobs at New York Fashion Week in September 2015 and has since walked for Miu Miu in Paris and for Bottega Veneta, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana in Milan, as well as fronting campaigns for Kérastase, Paco Rabanne and Versace.

Half a film career

Her first film role was a good one. David Fincher cast her in 'Gone Girl' (2014) as the student Ben Affleck's character is sleeping with. It's a handful of scenes, and they're the ones that turn the plot.

Then came 'Entourage' (2015), playing herself, 'We Are Your Friends' (2015) with Zac Efron, the comedy 'I Feel Pretty' (2018) with Amy Schumer, and a couple of small thrillers, 'Welcome Home' and 'In Darkness'.

Around 2020 she stopped. She fired her entire team of representatives and stepped away from auditioning, saying later that she didn't like how she was being sold or the parts that came with it.

Writing instead

The turn began in September 2020 with an essay for 'The Cut' called 'Buying Myself Back'. In it she described walking into a gallery and finding a Richard Prince canvas made from one of her Instagram photos, and a photographer publishing images from a 2012 shoot without her permission. She also accused that photographer of assaulting her; he denied it. The piece travelled everywhere.

A book followed. 'My Body', published in November 2021, is a set of essays about the business of displaying your own body, who profits from it and what it costs. It made the New York Times bestseller list.

Since October 2022 she has hosted the podcast 'High Low with EmRata', and she has run her own swimwear label, Inamorata, since 2017.

Back on screen, and a bidding war

She returned to acting in 2025 in 'Too Much', the Netflix series Lena Dunham shot largely in London. She plays Wendy, a knitwear-and-lip-gloss influencer engaged to the ex-boyfriend of the heroine, played by Megan Stalter. Dunham told her she had written the part with her in mind. Netflix didn't order a second season.

She married the producer Sebastian Bear-McClard in February 2018 and their son Sylvester was born in March 2021. They separated in July 2022 and she filed for divorce that September. She said she was bisexual later the same year. Since late 2025 she has been with the French director Romain Gavras, a relationship she confirmed on Instagram in February 2026.

In July 2026 twelve publishers bid for her second book. Penguin Press won it with a seven-figure offer for 'Mother F*cker', a memoir about dating and single motherhood that grew out of another essay for 'The Cut'. No publication date has been announced.
