Biography

She sang it herself in one of her biggest hits: no matter how many rocks she's got, she is still Jenny from the block. Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born on 24 July 1969 in the Bronx, in New York's Castle Hill neighbourhood, to Puerto Rican parents. Half a century later, the girl who shared a bedroom with her two sisters has become the most influential Latina entertainer in showbusiness history: actress, singer, dancer, producer and businesswoman, all of it at once and almost always right at the very top.

From the Fly Girls to Selena

Her first weapon was dance. She left home at eighteen after clashing with her mother over her artistic future and ended up sleeping on the sofa of the studio where she rehearsed. After years of classes, auditions and a European tour with a musical, in 1991 she earned a spot, chosen from thousands of hopefuls, as a Fly Girl, one of the dancers on the sketch show 'In Living Color', and from there she leapt into acting with ever bigger roles in 'My Family' (1995), 'Money Train' (1995) and 'Jack' (1996).

The bombshell arrived in 1997 with 'Selena': her portrayal of the doomed queen of tex-mex made her the first Latina actress to earn a million dollars for a film and brought a Golden Globe nomination. She won the part in a mass casting call of more than 20,000 hopefuls, and to this day she considers it the most special role of her career. That same year she faced the snake of 'Anaconda' and shot 'U Turn' for Oliver Stone.

Critics surrendered for good with 'Out of Sight' (1998), by Steven Soderbergh, where her chemistry with George Clooney, crowned by the famous car boot scene, remains the stuff of film school lectures. She even voiced the ant Azteca in 'Antz' (1998).

First at everything

Then she decided cinema alone was not enough. Her debut album, 'On the 6' (1999), named after the subway line that carried her from the Bronx to Manhattan, conquered radio with 'If You Had My Love' and 'Let's Get Loud'. And in January 2001 she set an unrepeatable milestone: her album 'J.Lo' and her comedy 'The Wedding Planner' hit number one the same week, something no woman had ever achieved. In total she has sold more than 80 million records, with anthems like 'Jenny from the Block', 'On the Floor' and 'Ain't Your Mama', and she even dared to record an album entirely in Spanish, 'Como ama una mujer' (2007).

On screen she strung together the sci-fi thriller 'The Cell' (2000), a visual landmark whose imagery is still quoted, the modern Cinderella tale of 'Maid in Manhattan' (2002), a US box office number one, the dancing with Richard Gere of 'Shall We Dance?' (2004), the in-law warfare with Jane Fonda of 'Monster-in-Law' (2005) and the rural drama 'An Unfinished Life' (2005), opposite Robert Redford. She also denounced the Ciudad Juárez femicides in 'Bordertown' (2007) and produced and starred with her then husband Marc Anthony in 'El Cantante' (2006), the biopic of salsa legend Héctor Lavoe.

Her business instinct ran in parallel: her Glow perfume launched the celebrity fragrance craze in 2002, followed by JLo Beauty, her Nuyorican production company and an empire that Time magazine has recognised by naming her among the world's most influential people several times.

Gigli, American Idol and the resurrection

It was not all smooth sailing. 'Gigli' (2003), shot with her then fiancé Ben Affleck, became one of Hollywood's most notorious flops, and she has admitted that period, 'Jersey Girl' (2004) included, was the lowest point of her career.

The resurrection was textbook: joining 'American Idol' as a judge in 2011 returned her to the centre of pop culture just as 'On the Floor' blared across the planet, the same year People magazine crowned her the world's most beautiful woman, the first ever to hold that title. She would later produce and judge the competition show 'World of Dance'. She lined up the comedy 'The Back-Up Plan' (2010), the ensemble piece 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' (2012), her voice in 'Ice Age 4' (2012), the thriller 'Parker' (2013) and the box office hit 'The Boy Next Door' (2015), as well as leading the cop drama 'Shades Of Blue' for three seasons alongside Ray Liotta and packing Las Vegas with her 'All I Have' residency, which grossed more than a hundred million dollars. She also voiced a family matriarch in the animated 'Home' (2014).

The crowning came twice over in 2019: the comedy 'Second Act' and, above all, 'Hustlers', where her veteran stripper Ramona, opposite Constance Wu, earned her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations; her absence from the Oscar shortlist was widely flagged as one of the year's great snubs. The film, which she also produced, was a box office smash. Months later she headlined the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show in Miami with Shakira, watched by more than a hundred million people and featuring her daughter Emme singing at her side, and in January 2021 she performed 'Let's Get Loud' at President Biden's inauguration, having starred in the Motown tribute at the 2019 Grammys.

The Bennifer era and the Spider Woman

The last few years have been a whirlwind. She released the romantic comedies 'Marry Me' (2022), timed for Valentine's Day with Owen Wilson, Maluma and a joint soundtrack album, and 'Shotgun Wedding' (2022), went full action with 'The Mother' (2023), Netflix's most watched film that year, and full sci-fi with 'Atlas' (2024), another global number one for the platform, both produced through her Nuyorican banner, and bared her soul in the autobiographical musical film 'This Is Me... Now: A Love Story' (2024), which she financed out of her own pocket.

She then surprised as the mother of wrestler Anthony Robles in 'Unstoppable' (2024), curiously produced by Artists Equity, the company founded by Affleck and Matt Damon, and fulfilled a decades-old dream with 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' (2025), the musical by Bill Condon in which she plays the diva Ingrid Luna alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh: the box office did not follow, but her performance drew her most unanimous applause since 'Hustlers'.

In the summer of 2025 she also returned to the stage with the 'Up All Night' tour, her first in six years, which opened in Pontevedra, Spain, swept through Europe and Asia across twenty concerts and rolled on into a new residency at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace straddling 2025 and 2026. And in June 2026 she premiered the Netflix comedy 'Office Romance', opposite Brett Goldstein and directed by Ol Parker, the platform's worldwide number one on its first day.

Front page loves

Few love lives have generated so many headlines. She married young to the waiter Ojani Noa (1997), lived a high profile romance with the rapper Diddy and a brief second marriage to the dancer Cris Judd, and in 2002 starred with Ben Affleck in the birth of "Bennifer", the portmanteau that named a whole genre of celebrity couples and inaugurated the modern tabloid era: they got engaged, postponed the wedding under paparazzi siege and split in 2004.

That same year she married the singer Marc Anthony, with whom she had her twins, Emme and Max, in 2008, divorcing in 2014. After four years and an engagement with former baseball star Alex Rodriguez, the story had a script twist in store: in 2021 she rekindled her romance with Affleck and in July 2022 they married in Las Vegas, with a lavish second ceremony in Georgia. The fairytale was short: she filed for divorce in August 2024, on their second anniversary, and it was finalised in February 2025. She has carried it with her head held high, devoted to the tour and to her children.
