Biography

It took Jeremy Allen White more than a decade of steady television work to become an overnight sensation. When 'The Bear' premiered in June 2022, his Carmy Berzatto, a brilliant and haunted chef running a Chicago sandwich joint, turned him into television's actor of the moment, put 'Yes, chef' into everyday speech and buried him in trophies.

A Brooklyn kid who danced first

He was born on 17 February 1991 in Brooklyn and grew up in Carroll Gardens. His parents were actors who never quite made a living from it: his father ended up filming legal depositions, his mother became a teacher. As a boy he trained in ballet, jazz and tap, and only at thirteen did he swap dance for acting, studying at Manhattan's Professional Performing Arts School.

After a teenage debut in the indie drama 'Afterschool' and a small part in 'Twelve', he landed Lip Gallagher in 'Shameless', the American remake of the Channel 4 favourite, opposite William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum. He played the gifted, chaotic eldest Gallagher brother for eleven seasons, from 2011 to 2021, slipping away between runs for 'Homecoming' with Julia Roberts and Dave Franco's directing debut 'The Rental'.

Two Emmys and a kitchen

'The Bear' changed everything. As Carmy, a fine dining chef who comes home to run the family sandwich shop after his brother's suicide, White anchored a series that became an instant phenomenon alongside Ayo Edebiri. The awards followed fast: two Emmys, three consecutive Golden Globes and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show served its fifth and final season in June 2026.

His film breakthrough came with 'The Iron Claw', Sean Durkin's A24 drama about the tragic Von Erich wrestling dynasty. Playing Kerry alongside Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson demanded a serious physical transformation and earned him some of the best reviews of 2023.

Becoming the Boss

Then came the biggest dare of his career: playing Bruce Springsteen in 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere', Scott Cooper's portrait of the making of 'Nebraska'. He spent months studying the musician's voice, mannerisms and guitar playing, sang everything himself rather than miming to the records, and shared the screen with Jeremy Strong as manager Jon Landau. The role brought him his first Golden Globe nomination for a film, though Oscar voters left him off the list in one of the season's most debated snubs.

He's kept busy in 2026. He voices Rotta the Hutt in 'The Mandalorian and Grogu', the Star Wars film with Pedro Pascal, and in October he leads 'The Social Reckoning', Aaron Sorkin's sequel to 'The Social Network', playing journalist Jeff Horwitz opposite Mikey Madison's Frances Haugen.

Offscreen he guards his privacy. He met actress Addison Timlin as a teenager on 'Afterschool'; they married in 2019 and have two daughters, Ezer and Dolores, born in 2018 and 2020, before she filed for divorce in 2023. A later romance with Spanish superstar Rosalía kept the paparazzi busy, and his 2024 Calvin Klein underwear campaign, shot on a New York rooftop, went round the world in hours and reportedly generated twelve million dollars in media exposure within two days.

The kitchen may be closed, but nobody expects Jeremy Allen White to stay out of the heat for long.
