Biography
Nine days ago, Melissa Barrera played her last performance as Rose in 'Titaníque', the Broadway musical that retells 'Titanic' through the songs of Céline Dion. It was her Broadway debut, it ran twice as long as planned, and it arrived three years after she was dropped from the biggest horror franchise of her career.
Monterrey, and a talent show
She was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on 4 July 1990, the eldest of four sisters in a Catholic, very musical family. She went to the city's American school, so she grew up bilingual, and later studied musical theatre at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Before that, in 2011, she competed on 'La Academia', the TV Azteca talent show. Two things came out of it: a contract with the network and the man she would marry.
Mexican telenovelas followed, 'Siempre tuya Acapulco' (2014) and 'Tanto amor' (2015), plus a part in Netflix's 'Club de Cuervos'. In 2017 she packed up and moved to Los Angeles.
Vida
Her first significant American job was 'Vida' (2018-2020), the Starz series about two Mexican-American sisters returning to East LA to take over their late mother's bar. She played Lyn, the charming one who lives off other people, and the show became a small landmark for how it handled the gentrification of a Latino neighbourhood.
From there she went to 'In the Heights' (2021), Jon M. Chu's film of the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical, as Vanessa, the salon worker who wants to design clothes, opposite Anthony Ramos.
Sam Carpenter
That same year she was cast to relaunch 'Scream'. In 'Scream' (2022) and 'Scream VI' (2023) she was Sam Carpenter, Billy Loomis's secret daughter, alongside Jenna Ortega. Both films did well and made her the face of the revived series.
In between she shot 'Carmen' (2022), a reworking of the opera directed by the choreographer Benjamin Millepied with Paul Mescal, and produced and starred in the thriller 'Bed Rest' (2023).
November 2023
After the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 and the Israeli offensive in Gaza, Barrera began posting on Instagram almost daily. In one post she wrote that Gaza was being treated "like a concentration camp" and referred to genocide and ethnic cleansing.
In November 2023 the production company Spyglass dropped her from 'Scream 7'. Its statement said the company had "zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech".
She rejected the characterisation: "I believe a group of people are not their leadership and that no governing body should be above criticism. I pray day and night for no more deaths." Jenna Ortega left the film soon afterwards, and the director attached to it, Christopher Landon, walked away after receiving death threats. 'Scream 7' eventually opened in February 2026 without either actress.
The episode cost her work for a while. Asked this month whether she would ever go back, she said not while the rights sit with the same company, but that she would return happily if they changed hands, because she had enjoyed making the films.
Back in by another door
She kept working regardless. In 2024 came 'Abigail', the kidnappers-and-a-vampire-child film from the same directors as her 'Scream' pictures, with Dan Stevens and Kathryn Newton, and 'Your Monster', a horror romantic comedy that won her the audience award at Sundance London.
Then Broadway. 'Titaníque' began previews on 26 March 2026 and opened on 12 April at the St. James, extended from a planned July finish to 20 September, and picked up four Tony nominations including best musical.
She has been married since 2019 to the singer Francisco Xavier Zazueta, whom she met on 'La Academia' fifteen years ago and who proposed on top of the Empire State Building. She is a global ambassador for Clinique, and in 2025 she said she had finished writing a romantic comedy she intends to direct herself.
