Mounia Akl

Mounia Akl is an actress, screenwriter and film director from Lebanon who lives between Beirut and New York. She has worked in television and on numerous short films, including 'Submarine', for which she received four awards at the Atlanta Film Festival, the Cinema Jove in Valencia, the Denver Film Festival and the Dubai International Film Festival, as well as a BAFTA nomination for Best Short Film and a Cinéfondation nomination at the Cannes Film Festival.

Akl studied architecture at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts and film directing at Columbia University, where she has also taught. Her first feature film, 'Costa Brava, Lebanon', premiered at the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, among others.

Her work in television includes the series 'Beirut, I Love You', in which she has worked not only as director, but also as scriptwriter, editor and actress. On the other hand, among her short films we can highlight 'El Gran Líbano', 'Eva', 'Christine' and 'Cheers, to Those Who Stay'.

She has worked more than once with Clara Roquet, Spanish screenwriter and director and winner of a Goya award for 'Libertad'. The two filmmakers have teamed up on the short film 'Submarine' and 'Costa Brava, Lebanon'.
