Plot
'But I'm a Cheerleader' marked the debut of American filmmaker Jamie Babbit in 1999. The story originated from Babbit, although the script was written by Brian Peterson.
'But I'm a Cheerleader' shows us the life of Megan Bloomfield, a cheerleader from the classic American high school who, of course, is the girlfriend of the football team captain. However, she is not too happy about this: she doesn't like the kisses from Jared, her boyfriend, and instead seeks constant contact with her friends. Additionally, she is a vegetarian, another reason why others treat her like a "weirdo." After showing several signs of homosexuality, her friends, her boyfriend, and her parents send her behind her back to a camp that cures this issue. Megan goes through several tests and in all of them she firmly identifies as a lesbian.
This funny movie features a cast of actors such as Natasha Lyonne as Megan, Michelle Williams, Brandt Wille, Bud Cort, Mink Stole, RuPaul, Cathy Moriarty, and Eddie Cibrian. In this first feature film by Jamie Babbit, the essence of the 90s is captured with a distinctive aesthetic, and a groundbreaking theme that was still not widely represented on the big screen at that time.
