Plot

Pedro Almodóvar returns to the cinema with his twentieth film with a tribute to the women. 'Julieta' is a movie where the main protagonists are women but also an emotional, intimate and profound drama behind this story.

The film, which initially was going to be called 'Silence', follows the story of a mother named Julieta and her daughter Antía suffering irreparable absence of Xoan, husband and father, causing a rift between the two women. Therefore, when the young Antia reaches the age of majority, she decides to leave the family home, leaving her mother completely desperate and looking for explanations.

Julieta (Adriana Ugarte and Emma Suárez), the protagonist, will experience throughout her life, a road of no return, where fears and loneliness will be her companions. From 1985 to 2015, the woman suffer great absences of abandon of different people that have marked her life. A personal regression allow Juliet to do an introspective analysis of her own life but also human and women nature. Her best time in the 80 makes her see that her present life is a disaster that only a miracle could change.

The film also stars Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Michelle Jenner, Darío Grandinetti, Rossy de Palma, Susi Sánchez and Pilar Castro.

Trivia

The original screenplay was written in English, but when Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar went scouting to Canada, the director felt insecure to shoot in a place he didn't really know, in a language he didn't master and with a story he felt worked better at Spain.

This marks Almodóvar's return to drama, more specifically "women's" drama, which he hasn't worked on since 'Volver' (2006).

Pedro Almodóvar cancelled all his interviews and the official premiere in Madrid after he and his brother were linked to the Panama Papers scandal.
