Plot
Based on the life of Eduard Veniaminovich Savenko (better known as "Limonov"), the film revisits much of his experiences around the world. The writer and poet was born in 1943 in the Soviet Union. There, he also gained fame as a controversial figure due to his continuous challenges to the social conventions and boundaries of his homeland. Despite being raised in the U.S.S.R., Limonov decided to move to the United States and later to France, where his revolutionary ideas against the system would begin. When he returned to his country, he became a political leader and founded the National Bolshevik Party. Thus, he began to stand out as a person who lived in constant scandal and ideological extremism, accompanied by his undeniable talent for literature.
The film is based on the eponymous biographical book by Emmanuel Carrère. In fact, the director has stated that the film is not a conventional biopic of Limonov, but rather an adaptation of Emmanuel Carrère's perspective, who did not participate in the production. Co-produced between Italy, France, and Spain, it is directed by Kirill Serebrennikov ('Leto' or '(M)uchenik') and stars Ben Whishaw ('Skyfall' or 'The Lobster') in the role of Limonov.
