Plot
'Miroirs No. 3' is a German psychological drama written and directed by Christian Petzold. The film, which debuts at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, premieres in Germany on September 18 of that same year.
It stars Paula Beer, who plays Laura, a young pianist who suffers a traffic accident while traveling with her boyfriend. He dies and she emerges unscathed, assisted by Betty, a woman who lives in a nearby cottage and witnesses the accident. In shock, she accepts Betty's offer to stay in her house.
Gradually, Betty and Laura begin to establish a mother-daughter relationship that raises the suspicions of Betty's husband and son, as well as Paula herself. Betty, who lost a daughter with a striking physical resemblance to Laura, uses her to cope with a grief she has been unable to overcome. Thus, in their daily coexistence, the bond and relationship between them begins to become increasingly unsettling.
In addition to Beer, 'Miroirs No. 3' stars Barbara Auer as Betty, alongside Philip Froissant, Matthias Brand, and Enno Trebs. The original title of the film, in French, refers to Maurice Ravel's suite Miroirs, although it has been translated for various markets into local languages. It received mostly positive reviews, particularly highlighting Paula Beer's performance as the lead.
