Plot

A police inspector (Gael García Bernal) hunts down Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco), who becomes a fugitive in his home country in the late 1940s for joining the Communist Party. Rather than a conventional biography, Neruda is a reimagined account of the famous poet's period as a Communist Senator in 1948 at the time his party was banned and the film explores how he fought for his life, eventually escaping on horseback to Argentina in order to hide from the chilean authorities. The story flees from history a bit to develop a different and poetical point of view. Also starring Alfredo Castro as Gabriel González Videla, Mercedes Morán as Delia del Carril and Diego Muñoz as Martínez.
