In the 1950s, Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Will Poulter) marry young and move from Kansas to San Diego, seeking to build the American dream with stable jobs and a home of their own where they can start a family. As Lee settles into his new routine, his brother Julius (Jacob Elordi) returns from the Korean War, disoriented and aimless.

With an innate talent for poker, Julius dives into the vibrant yet dangerous life of Las Vegas, surviving on bets and endless nights. Despite being in different worlds, Muriel and Julius keep in touch through letters, sharing details of their lives without realizing how much they have in common: both feel suffocated by routine and need something more to feel alive.

Tired of her job serving tables and a marriage that has become monotonous, Muriel begins to secretly bet on horse races, discovering that she has a sharp instinct that makes her a consistent winner.
