Plot
'Society of the Snow' is an adventure and survival film written and directed by spanish filmaker JA Bayona for Netflix. It was selected to close the Venice International Film Festival in 2023. It is the second film to depict the 1972 airplane crash after the English-language film 'Alive' in 1993. The film follows the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 en route to Chile with the local rugby team aboard. The airplane crashes in the middle of the Andes, where only 29 passengers survive in one of the world's toughest environments. There they need to survive, even if they are forced to resort to extreme measures they never imagined.
'Society of the Snow' is produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida and J.A. Bayona. Starring Enzo Vogrincic ('Yosi, the Regretful Spy'), Matías Recalt ('CIegos'), Agustín Pardella ('Todo por el juego'), Esteban Kukuriczka ('Manual de supervivencia'), Rafael Federman ('The Sleepwalkers') and Tomas Wolf, with a script by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego from a novel by Pablo Vierci.
J.A. Bayona had his debut as a director with 'The Orphange' (2007) in Cannes and won seven Goyas. In 2012 he got into the English cinema with 'The Impossible' and won another five Goyas. Other titles he's directed include 'A Monster Calls', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' and 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom'.
