Straw

'Straw' is a U.S. dramatic film written, produced, and directed by Tyler Perry. It premieres on June 6, 2025, worldwide through Netflix.

The film stars Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson, who this time plays Janiyah Wiltkinson, a single mother struggling to care for her young daughter Aria, who frequently suffers from seizures. Janiyah's already difficult life reaches an unsustainable point when her landlord evicts her for not paying rent, while social services threaten to take her daughter away believing that her injuries are due to neglect on her part.

On the same day, her boss fires her from her job at a grocery store. With nothing to lose, she confronts him when two robbers enter the store. Janiyah ends up grabbing one of their guns and kills him on the spot. Her boss accuses her of having planned the whole thing, and in desperation, Janiyah shoots him as well. On her way to the bank to collect her last paycheck, the bank refuses to pay her without identification. In a fit of rage, Janiyah pulls out the gun she had and holds up the bank demanding money...

'Straw' features an overwhelmingly African American cast that includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Sinbad, and Rockmond Dunbar, among others. The film receives mixed reviews after its release.
