Plot

Makoto Shinkai, the director behind the successful films 'Your Name' and 'Weathering With You', is back with 'Suzume', a new animated movie that mixes drama, comedy and supernatural elements. The story is centered on a young woman with the ability to see things that other people cannot see.

Suzume is 17 years old and lives in a small town in the southwest part of Japan. One day, a mysterious boy asks her about a door, and she finds one in some ruins where the door seems to have survived whatever catastrophe happened there. When she opens it, she also opens other doors in other places in Japan that unleash dangerous things. Suzume has to close them in order to protect the ones she loves, and the whole country.

The movie is inspired on the big earthquake that hit Japan in 2011. Makoto Shinkai pens the script of the film. The filmmaker collaborates again with RADWIMPS, who worked with him in 'Your Name' and 'Weathering With You', in the soundtrack. 'Suzume' got its debut at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022, and later the movie opened in Japanese cinemas in November with great reviews. More than 10 million people went to see it and it grossed more than 100 million dollars at the box office only in Japan.
