Grandier is a cleric who has earned many enemies because of his opposition to promiscuity and celibacy. The liberal attitude of the priest, as well as the testimonies of the Prioress Mother Joan of the Angels, feuding with him for refusing to be confessor of the convent, served Cardinal Richelieu to accuse him of witchcraft. Grandier is tortured and finally burned at the stake, taking care the Church previously have left documented a series of exorcisms led by Father Barre all the nuns of the convent in which he allegedly suffered convulsions, screamed and made sexual advances to priests participating in exorcism.
