Indiewire
Much like his lighter and less ambitious debut, McDowell?s second film is haunted by roads not taken and choices not made. See-sawing between acceptance and remorse, he seduces his characters with second chances, throwing them at a deviously knotted idea and watching them untangle their way towards some kind of self-understanding.
The Hollywood Reporter
The film slows when it should gradually accelerate and reduces the import of what it?s been dancing around by delivering an unconvincing resolution to its numerous issues.
Variety
Though ?The Discovery? starts out with a great premise, its mystery dissipates over a somewhat tepid course as the concept ultimately heads in a direction we?ve seen many times before, and depends overmuch on chemistry that fails to materialize between stars Jason Segel and Rooney Mara.
The Guardian
Nothing in this movie happens ?feverishly?. Everything is paced to make a snail seem swift, which is ultimately a big problem, but does allow for a few trippy, midnight movie-type delights.
