Trilogy... kind of
Bakshi wanted to adapt 'The return of the King' as well, but producer Saul Zaentz didn't allow him to, since he considered this film the worst experience of his career. Rankin and Bass were the ones to make an animated film for 'The return of the King', much worse valued by fans and critics than Bakshi's.
Rotoscoping
The film uses the rotoscoping animation technique, filming the real images first in order to turn them into animation later. This was the first feature film to be shot in its entirety through rotoscoping.

The rotoscoping scenes were filmed in Spain.
