Plot
'La bola negra' is a Spanish drama directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. It is loosely based on an unfinished play of the same name by the poet Federico García Lorca and features a screenplay by Los Javis and Alberto Conejero. The film is released on September 25, 2026 in Spain after a successful run through international festivals, which leads Los Javis to win the award for best direction at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film tells in an interwoven manner three stories starring three gay men in three different historical periods: 1932, 1937, and 2017. In 1932, young Carlos is unable to gain admission to the casino his father frequents due to his alleged homosexuality. In 1937, in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, Sebastián is tasked with guarding a prisoner of war, Rafael Rodríguez Rapún. And in 2017, Alberto receives the news of the death of his grandfather, with whom he had no relationship, who leaves him an unexpected inheritance.
Although the film includes real characters such as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún and García Lorca himself, it is a largely fictionalized story and does not bear complete similarities to reality.
'La bola negra' stars Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, and Milo Quifes in the main roles. The cast is completed by Lola Dueñas, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close, who performs a good part of her role in Spanish. Guitarricadelafuente also composes and performs "La Nieve", the film's original theme song. The film is shot in various locations in Burgos, Cantabria, and Granada, as well as in Greece.
