Plot
Roman Coleman (Matthias Schoenaerts, 'Far from the Madding Crowd') has served 12 years in a maximum-security prison after leaving his partner with permanent brain damage. Afraid of his own tendencies towards violence and explosions of temper, Roman does not believe he should be integrated back into society, and resists attempts to be rehabilitated, despite his desire to see his pregnant daughter, Martha (Gideon Adlon, 'The Society'), and improve his relationship with her. When rancher Myles (Bruce Dern, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood') arrives, however, he insists that Roman take part in a rehabilitation program which requires the prisoners to train wild mustangs, with Roman being paired with the most difficult and aggressive mustang of them all. They are given five weeks to train their assigned mustang before the steed is sold at auction. Though Roman initially struggles to connect with and train his horse, he is helped and guided by his fellow inmate and gifted horse trainer, Henry (Jason Mitchell, 'Straight Outta Compton') and ends up fostering a deep bond with the mustang, which he names Marquis.
'The Mustang' is directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre ('Rabbit') and is written by Clermont-Tonnerre in collaboration with Brock Norman Brock ('Bronson') and Mona Fastvold ('The Sleepwalker').

				Trivia
Based on a short film
It is based on the short film 'Rabbit' by the same director. In this short, a prisoner is entrusted to this animal as part of the "pet association" program of the prison.
The Cowboys
In one scene, Coleman's cellmate sarcastically refers to him as John Wayne. Bruce Dern, who appears in this film, appeared alongside Wayne in The Cowboys, murdering his character. It was one of Wayne's few on-screen deaths.
Debut
Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's feature film directorial debut. She developed Mustang through the Sundance Labs and received the Sundance Institute/NHK Award for the project in 2015.
