Plot

Year 1957, Geneviève and her mother, Madame Émery, live modestly, both run an umbrella store. She is very young and falls in love with Guy, a young mechanic of humble family. Both love and promise marriage despite the opposition of Madame Émery, who considers that her daughter is too young to marry and he does not have the social position enough to remove them from the poor live. That pure love of heart will be interrupted when the army calls Guy in the ranks to fight in the Algerian war. Without news of him and believing him dead, Geneviève accepts the advice of his mother and, because she's pregnant with Guy, and she marries Roland, a handsome jeweler who is in love with the beautiful girl. Time passes and the unexpected happens, Guy returns from the war, but he discovers that his beloved fiancée, the one who kept him alive during the conflict, is married to another man. This will cause Guy, in pain, to marry Madeleine, the young nurse who takes care of his aunt and who, in secret love, did decide to wait for him. Directed by Jacques Demy, the film won the Palme d'Or 1964 Cannes Films Festival.
