Plot

Anna Fox (Amy Adams) is an agoraphobic woman and former child psychologist living alone in Harlem, New York. Following a traumatic experience, she finds herself unable to venture outside her house, despite the fact that her husband and daughter, Ed (Anthony Mackie) and Olivia (Mariah Bozeman), have since left, and spends her days watching Hitchcock movies whilst drinking and waiting for the next in her sequence of prescription pills to roll around.

The Russell family, comprised of father Alistair (Gary Oldman), mother Jane (Julianne Moore) and teenage son, Ethan (Fred Hechinger), move in opposite Anna, with both Ethan and his mother visiting her to introduce themselves. A while later, however, Anna looks outside of her window and believes that she sees Jane be brutally stabbed to death inside her own home. Despite a series of strange occurrences that follow the act, the police insist that she hallucinated the whole thing. To determine what truly happened to Jane, Anna will have to open herself up to the own past she keeps painfully hidden away.

'The Woman in the Window' is directed by Joe Wright ('Pride and Prejudice', 'Anna Karenina', 'Black Mirror: Nosedive'). Based on the novel of the same name by A.J. Finn, it has been adapted for screen by Tracy Letts.

Trivia

A past in DC

Both Gary Oldman and Amy Adams have participated in superhero movies of the DC universe. The first in the trilogy of The Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan and the second in the role of Lois Lane in 'Man of Steel'.

Confusing the audience

In a test with a target audience that was held in July 2019, the audience did not finish understanding the film, so it ended up delaying its premiere from 2019 to 2020 to record some scenes again so that they were clearer.

Composers replaced

Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor were originally hired to record the movie's music. After the premiere of the movie was delayed and the movie was slow to return to production, it was announced that both were replaced by Danny Elfman.
