The title sequence features close-ups of the faces of real former inmates, including several brief shots of Piper Kerman, whose book was the basis for the TV series. Kerman is the one who blinks after Laura Prepon is credited.

Laura Prepon originally auditioned for the role of Piper. Yael Stone originally auditioned for the role of Nicky Nichols. Abigail Savage originally auditioned for the role of Alex Vause.

Uzo Aduba's character was only meant to appear in the first three episodes. After seeing her performances, the writers and producers made her a recurring character.
