Biography

Carrying the most famous surname in Mexican comedy could have been a shortcut, but she insisted on turning it into a challenge. Aislinn González Michel, known worldwide as Aislinn Derbez, was born in Mexico City on 18 March 1987, the eldest child of comedy superstar Eugenio Derbez and the voice actress Gabriela Michel, the Spanish dub voice of Samantha in 'Sex and the City'. From that double inheritance, comedy and voice, came the quietest of the Derbez clan: an actress who has built her career slowly, between cinema, Netflix and personal growth.

A childhood away from the spotlight

Her parents separated when she was very young and Aislinn grew up with her mother, far from her father's media whirlwind. For years her relationship with Eugenio was distant, a wound both have discussed openly and took decades to heal; today it is one of the strongest bonds in the family, though she likes to remember it was not always so.

She began modelling at 15, but soon made clear her ambitions were serious: at 18 she moved alone to New York, studying Visual Arts at the School of Visual Arts while training as an actress, stringing together short films and theatre between 2005 and 2009. When she returned to Mexico she was not coming back as "the daughter of", but to prove a craft of her own.

From 'A la mala' to Elena de la Mora

Her first steps in Mexican cinema came with 'Te presento a Laura' (2010) and 'El atentado' (2010), and her work in 'Abolición de la propiedad' (2012) earned her a best actress nomination at the Guadalajara Film Festival. The European co-production 'Little Baby Jesus' (2013) followed.

Stardom arrived with a romantic comedy: 'A la mala' (2015), in which she played an actress hired to test men's fidelity, stormed the Mexican box office. She followed it with the action comedy 'Compadres' (2016), 'Macho' (2016) and the hit 'Hazlo como hombre' (2017).

The international leap came twice over. In 2018 she became Elena de la Mora in 'The House of Flowers', the irreverent series by Manolo Caro that turned the De la Mora family into a global Netflix phenomenon, sharing the flower shop with Cecilia Suárez and the legendary Verónica Castro. In 2019 she tried Hollywood alongside Gina Rodriguez in the thriller 'Miss Bala', the American remake of the Mexican classic. Her most recent film is 'Con los años que me quedan' (2022).

'De viaje con los Derbez' and the family brand

In 2019 she agreed to the experiment that changed everything at home: 'De viaje con los Derbez', the reality show that puts Eugenio and his four children on a plane, with Vadhir Derbez and José Eduardo Derbez on board and little Aitana completing the clan. What looked like a whim became one of the most watched Spanish language shows in streaming, running season after season into 2025, with Aislinn as the reflective sibling who says out loud what nobody else dares.

Her other calling sets her apart from the clan: in 2020 she launched 'La Magia del Caos', a podcast on psychology, vulnerability and wellbeing that climbed the Spanish language charts and gave her an identity of her own beyond acting, born, as she has admitted, from her own crises of motherhood, divorce and identity.

Mauricio Ochmann, Kailani and the hardest year

Her best known love story began on a film set: on A la mala she met Mauricio Ochmann, whom she married in 2016. Their daughter Kailani was born in February 2018, and in March 2020 the couple announced their separation, followed by a co-parenting relationship so friendly they still holiday together.

The hardest blow came later: on 24 November 2025 her mother, Gabriela Michel, died suddenly of a heart attack at 65, and Aislinn asked to live her grief in peace while Mexico rediscovered the career of a legendary dubbing actress. Having survived a year she herself called brutal, she faces the future as she always has: at her own pace. She stopped being "Eugenio Derbez's daughter" a long time ago. Now she is simply Aislinn, and it is hard to think of a bigger victory.
