Biography

Daniel Ings never actually finished drama school. He'd won a place at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, one of the most respected in Britain, but the work started arriving before graduation day did, including a blink and you'll miss it turn as a guard in 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' (2011). It turned out to be a sound bet.

Born on 30 November 1985 in Wiltshire, he went to Dauntsey's School and read theatre studies at Lancaster University, where he met his future wife, before a stint with the National Youth Theatre. On stage he appeared in Danny Boyle's celebrated 'Frankenstein' at the National Theatre, with Benedict Cumberbatch, and in 'One Man, Two Guvnors' alongside James Corden.

Luke, Mike Parker and a decade of scene stealing

Television found him a niche early: the charming liability. After playing hapless BBC executive Matt Taverner in the mockumentary 'W1A', he broke through as Luke, the womanising best friend in 'Lovesick' (2014 to 2018), the romcom that began life on Channel 4 under the unfortunate title 'Scrotal Recall' before Netflix renamed and rescued it. Antonia Thomas and Johnny Flynn completed the trio.

In 'The Crown' he spent two seasons as Mike Parker, equerry and partner in mischief to Matt Smith's Prince Philip, sharing a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination with the ensemble. He then did two seasons of the CBS procedural 'Instinct' opposite Alan Cumming, turned heads as Dan the motorbike riding love interest in 'Sex Education', played Billie Piper's husband Cob in the bruising 'I Hate Suzie' and popped up in 'The Gold', the BBC's Brink's Mat drama.

Freddy Horniman changes everything

Then came 'The Gentlemen' (2024), Guy Ritchie's Netflix crime caper. As Freddy Horniman, the cowardly older brother of Theo James's duke, a man willing to dance in a chicken suit to save his own skin, Ings stole the show outright and finally became a name rather than a familiar face. Kaya Scodelario co stars, and a second season arrives on 3 September 2026.

His film work has been sparing but well chosen: the skiing pal of Taron Egerton's ski jumper in 'Eddie the Eagle' (2016), with Hugh Jackman, a small part in 'The Marvels' (2023) and suspect Adam Sutherland in 'The Woman in Cabin 10' (2025), Netflix's thriller with Keira Knightley.

A Baratheon in Westeros

In 2026 he joined the Game of Thrones universe in HBO's 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, the Laughing Storm, a booming knight whose mix of menace and mirth might have been written with him in mind.

Away from set he guards his privacy carefully. He lives in north London with his wife and children, and when interviewers dig for personal detail they tend to come away with stories about the family's pet geckos, Sparky and Lloyd, rather than anything juicier. After fifteen years of quietly improving everything he appears in, the noisy roles have finally found him.
