Biography

His first big role lasted a single episode, yet nobody has forgotten it: he was Kemal Pamuk, the Turkish diplomat who died in Lady Mary's bed in 'Downton Abbey' (2010), one of the most talked about deaths in British television history, a scandal the series carried for whole seasons afterwards. Behind that face was Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis, born in High Wycombe on 16 December 1984 and raised in a small Buckinghamshire village, the youngest of five siblings.

His striking surname hides his roots: his paternal grandfather was a Greek refugee who fled his country during the Second World War. Before acting, James took a philosophy degree at the University of Nottingham, trained at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and was even the singer and guitarist of the London band Shere Khan, which split in 2012.

Four, the 'Divergent' hero

He made his film debut under Woody Allen in 'You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger' (2010) and tried raucous comedy with 'The Inbetweeners Movie' (2011). In the United States he led the police drama 'Golden Boy' (2013), playing the youngest police commissioner in New York history in a show cancelled after a single season, and joined Kate Beckinsale's vampire saga as David in 'Underworld: Awakening' (2012) and 'Underworld: Blood Wars' (2016).

Global stardom arrived in 2014 as Tobias "Four" Eaton, the brooding instructor of 'Divergent', the young adult phenomenon that stormed the box office with Shailene Woodley. He returned in 'The Divergent Series: Insurgent' (2015) and 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant' (2016), though the saga was left without an ending for good: the final instalment was cancelled and fans are still waiting for a closure that never came.

That era also produced the independent drama 'The Benefactor' (2015), opposite Richard Gere, the black comedy 'War on Everyone' (2016) and the apocalyptic thriller 'How It Ends' (2018).

From Jane Austen to 'The White Lotus'

Refusing to stay boxed in as a young adult hero, he returned to British period television with 'Sanditon' (2019), the unfinished Jane Austen adaptation he starred in and produced, whose story had to be rewritten when he chose not to continue beyond the first season. He then led 'The Time Traveler's Wife' (2022), the take on Audrey Niffenegger's novel written by Steven Moffat, and voiced the forgemaster Hector in 'Castlevania', the animated series based on the video game.

The role that reinvented him, though, was Cameron Sullivan, the charming yet toxic millionaire of the second season of 'The White Lotus' (2022), Mike White's satire, in which he played an unfaithful husband on a Sicilian holiday that brought out the worst in every guest. Alongside Aubrey Plaza, that satire earned him his first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama, and opened a new chapter as a complex adult leading man.

Guy Ritchie's duke and a horror smash

In 2024 he became Eddie Horniman, the aristocrat who inherits a dukedom with a cannabis farm in the basement in 'The Gentlemen', the Netflix hit created by Guy Ritchie. Its second season, darker, partly set on the Italian lakes and once again alongside Kaya Scodelario, arrives in late 2026.

Cinema has brought recent joys too: he played two estranged twins in 'The Monkey' (2025), the mischievous Stephen King adaptation about a toy monkey that unleashes absurd deaths, directed by Osgood Perkins. It cost around ten million dollars and grossed close to seventy, ranking among the writer's most profitable adaptations. That same year he shared the bill with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 'Fuze', a heist thriller in which a bomb scare in London becomes the perfect cover for a robbery.

Greek roots and a commitment to refugees

In private, he is one of those actors who keeps his life firmly under lock and key. He has been married since 2018 to the Irish actress Ruth Kearney, whom he met at drama school in Bristol and dated for nearly a decade beforehand, and the couple have two children. The family divides its time between Venice Beach, California, and London.

The story of his Greek grandfather, who ended up in Syria fleeing the war, shaped his other great cause. He has worked with UNHCR since 2016, when he travelled to Greece to witness the Syrian refugee crisis first hand, a twist of history he has pointed out himself: today it is Syrians who make, in the opposite direction, the journey that once saved his family. In June 2024 he was named a Global Goodwill Ambassador for the UN agency. The refugee's grandson now devotes his fame to those walking the same road. And meanwhile, year after year, his name keeps appearing on every shortlist of favourites to become the next James Bond.
