Biography

To millions of Netflix viewers she's Alma, the married lawyer of 'Dark Desire'; to a whole generation across Latin America and Spain she'll always be Lupita from 'Rebelde'. Maite Perroni Beorlegui was born in Mexico City on 9 March 1983, grew up in Guadalajara and trained at CEA, Televisa's acting school, squeezing a three year programme into two. Fresh out of class, she landed the part that changed everything.

In 2004 she joined the teen telenovela 'Rebelde', Mexico's adaptation of Argentina's 'Rebelde Way', as Lupita Fernández, the scholarship girl at an elite school, across 440 episodes and three seasons. Out of the show came a real band: RBD, with Anahí, Dulce María, Alfonso Herrera, Christian Chávez and Christopher von Uckermann, which sold over 15 million records, recorded in Spanish, Portuguese and English and filled stadiums across the Americas and Europe before its farewell tour ended in 2009. The band even fronted its own sitcom, 'RBD: La familia' (2007), and a documentary shot on their final tour is still awaiting release.

Queen of the telenovela

Televisa wasted no time making her a leading lady. 'Cuidado con el ángel' (2008), opposite William Levy, sold to dozens of countries, won her a TVyNovelas award and led Univision to crown her "the new queen of telenovelas". For a decade she barely left prime time: 'Mi pecado' (2009), 'Triunfo del amor' (2010), 'Cachito de cielo' (2012), 'La gata' (2014), 'Antes muerta que Lichita' (2015), which won her the TVyNovelas award for best actress, and 'Papá a toda madre' (2017). People en Español listed her among its 50 most beautiful for twelve years running. She also voiced Di the hen in the animated hit 'Un gallo con muchos huevos' (2015) and its sequels, and released a solo album, 'Eclipse de Luna' (2013), with hits like 'Loca' alongside Cali y El Dandee.

Streaming stardom with 'Dark Desire'

Streaming turned her into a global name. After the wife swapping comedy 'El juego de las llaves' (2019) on Amazon, she led Netflix's erotic thriller 'Dark Desire' (2020) with Alejandro Speitzer and Erik Hayser, watched by 35 million accounts in its first month at the height of lockdown. A second season followed in 2022, and in 2023 she played identical triplets separated at birth in the Netflix mystery 'Tríada'.

On the big screen she shot 'Sin ti no puedo' (2022) in Spain for director Chus Gutiérrez and headlined the romcom 'El roomie' (2024). Coming up are 'La familia Benetón +2' and the musical 'No te olvides' with Xochitl Gomez, about three generations of women facing Alzheimer's.

The RBD reunion and life as a mother

In 2023 RBD finally gave in to two decades of fan pressure: the Soy Rebelde Tour, without Alfonso Herrera, packed stadiums across the Americas and ranked among the year's highest grossing tours, with Perroni on stage just months after giving birth. The aftermath was messier: an audit found irregularities in the tour's accounts and she, Christian Chávez and Christopher von Uckermann took legal action against former manager Guillermo Rosas, a statement Anahí and Dulce María chose not to sign. Perroni has since admitted the women of the group have drifted apart.

After six years with Chilean musician Koko Stambuk, she married producer Andrés Tovar in October 2022 in a ceremony in Valle de Bravo, and their daughter Lía arrived in May 2023. These days she only takes jobs that keep her close to home, and she's said openly that she'd love another child. Twenty years after Lupita first walked into the Elite Way School, the formats change and the audience keeps following her.
