Biography
She got the role of her career at 44, which is not how this usually works. Melanie Lynskey had been acting for twenty-seven years by the time 'Yellowjackets' arrived in 2021, most of them in supporting parts she made more interesting than they were written to be.
The odd thing is that she started at the very top.
New Plymouth, a school hall and Peter Jackson
She was born on 16 May 1977 in New Plymouth, on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island, the eldest of five. Her father was an orthopaedic surgeon and the family moved around, including a year in England. She joined the school drama group because it was the one place her shyness didn't follow her.
She was fifteen when Peter Jackson's casting team turned up at her school looking for two teenagers. She ended up co-leading 'Heavenly Creatures' (1994) opposite a then-unknown Kate Winslet, as Pauline Parker, one of the two girls who murdered one of their mothers in Christchurch in 1954.
The film was nominated for the original screenplay Oscar and remains a landmark of New Zealand cinema. She won best actress at the New Zealand film awards.
What happened next is the strange part: nobody around her encouraged her to continue. She has said the adults involved gently steered her away from the idea that Hollywood was realistic. She started an English literature degree at Victoria University of Wellington and left after eighteen months.
Twenty years in supporting roles
She moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and spent two decades in small parts, a lot of them memorable. She was the stepsister in 'Ever After' (1998) with Drew Barrymore, a barmaid in 'Coyote Ugly' (2000) and the old friend back home in 'Sweet Home Alabama' (2002).
There was also 'Shattered Glass' (2003) and Clint Eastwood's 'Flags of Our Fathers' (2006).
The year that sums up the period is 2009, when she turned up in four films: 'Up in the Air', Steven Soderbergh's 'The Informant!', 'Away We Go' and 'Leaves of Grass'. She auditioned for the first of those in an American accent and Jason Reitman didn't realise she wasn't American until he'd hired her.
Then came the addict mother in 'Win Win' (2011) and Aunt Helen in 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' (2012).
Television was what actually paid for all of it. From 2003 she played Rose, the stalker next door, on 'Two and a Half Men'. She left the regular cast in 2005 for fear of being typecast but kept guesting until the final episode in 2015, and she has put it plainly: three or four episodes a year covered the mortgage and funded the independent films.
Leading, at last
Her first lead came at thirty-five, in 'Hello I Must Be Going' (2012), as an unemployed divorcee back living with her parents. The reviews were essentially a collective note to the industry that she had been available all along.
After that, people started writing parts for her. Her friend Clea DuVall, whom she met making 'But I'm a Cheerleader' (1999), wrote 'The Intervention' (2016) for her, and it won her a special jury award at Sundance.
Macon Blair did the same with 'I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore' (2017), where she plays a nursing assistant who has had enough and goes looking for the men who burgled her house. It took the grand jury prize at Sundance.
On television she was the psychic in 'Castle Rock' (2018) and, in 'Mrs. America' (2020), a campaigner against the Equal Rights Amendment, working opposite Cate Blanchett.
Shauna
In 'Yellowjackets' she plays Shauna, a suburban housewife sitting on what she did to survive a plane crash twenty-five years earlier, alongside Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis.
She won the Critics' Choice Award for best actress in a drama in 2022 and picked up two Emmy nominations as a lead. The third season ended in April 2025 and the show was renewed for a fourth and final run, now in production.
In 2023 she added another Emmy nomination, this time for guest actress, as Kathleen in 'The Last of Us', a militia leader Craig Mazin wrote specifically for her and who doesn't exist in the game. Around the same time she played Leonardo DiCaprio's wife in 'Don't Look Up' (2021).
Success brought a conversation she hadn't asked for. She has described costume designers telling her to her face that nobody had warned them there would be "girls like you", and years of being told she wasn't beautiful while she was in fact starving herself. When someone suggested online that her body was wrong for 'The Last of Us', she replied that the character was supposed to be clever, not muscular.
Going home
In 2025 she made the film that probably mattered most to her. In 'Pike River', directed by Robert Sarkies, she plays Anna Osborne, one of two women who spent years fighting for accountability after an explosion killed twenty-nine men at a New Zealand mine in 2010. Her husband was one of them.
It premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and opened in New Zealand cinemas in October 2025, with Robyn Malcolm sharing the lead.
Her most recent release is 'Don't Say Good Luck', which Netflix put out in August 2026, where she plays the mother, ill with cancer, of the teenager played by Sunny Sandler.
She was married to the actor Jimmi Simpson between 2007 and 2014. In 2013 she met Jason Ritter on a shoot; they had a daughter in December 2018 and married in 2020 in a small ceremony in Atlanta. She has lived in Los Angeles since 2000.
