Biography

Aaron Ashmore was born a minute before him, and half the world has been mixing them up ever since. Shawn and his identical twin arrived on 7 October 1979 in Richmond, British Columbia, and both ended up in the same trade. The confusion is not just a fan problem: every time one of them turns up in something new, half the internet spends a week working out which brother it is.

Their parents, Rick and Linda, had nothing to do with the business. The family moved from the west coast to Alberta and then Ontario, and the boys started out doing commercials as kids. Shawn made his screen debut at nine on the Canadian series 'Katts and Dog', and by fourteen he had a Gemini nomination, the Canadian equivalent of an Emmy, for the TV film 'Guitarman'.

The first part that gave him a following was Jake Berenson in 'Animorphs' (1998), the Nickelodeon adaptation of the young adult books about a group of kids who can turn into animals, which ran to 26 episodes across two seasons. Aaron passed through it too, uncredited, standing in as his brother's double in a couple of episodes where two Jakes appear at once. It is hard to think of a neater summary of their working relationship.

Iceman, or four X-Men films

The role that put his face on screens worldwide was Bobby Drake in 'X-Men' (2000), the Bryan Singer film that opened the door to modern superhero cinema. He was barely more than a pupil in the background there, behind Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Ian McKellen.

That changed with 'X2' (2003), where Iceman got a storyline of his own, including the scene in which he tells his parents he is a mutant and his mother asks whether he has tried not being one, a sequence read ever since as a coming out metaphor. The performance won him the MTV Movie Award for breakthrough male performance in 2004.

He came back for 'X-Men: The Last Stand' (2006), by then one of the younger leads of the saga, and turned up again in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' (2014). Four films across fourteen years is enough to get you called Iceman in the street for life, and he has never seemed to mind much.

Around the same time he did 'Cadet Kelly' (2002) for Disney Channel with Hilary Duff, a title millions of teenagers watched at the time.

Terry Fox, low budget horror and a long haul

The job he has said he is proudest of barely travelled outside Canada. In the television film 'Terry' (2005) he played Terry Fox, the young man who lost a leg to cancer and set off in 1980 to run across the country raising money for research. Fox is close to a national saint there, and the part brought Ashmore another Gemini nomination.

The years after the first X-Men trilogy were split between Canadian productions and supporting parts in the United States, without ever making the jump to studio leading man. It is the sort of career that does not make magazine covers but fills a CV.

He led '3 Needles' (2006), did survival horror with 'The Ruins' (2008) and 'Frozen' (2010), the one where three friends are left hanging on a ski lift, and carried on with 'The Day' (2011), 'Mariachi Gringo' (2012) and 'Devil's Gate' (2018).

That freezing shoot on 'Frozen' changed his life for another reason: it is where he met Dana Wasdin, who was working on the production side.

From The Following to the station house in The Rookie

American television is where he has actually built the career. Between 2013 and 2015 he was agent Mike Weston in 'The Following', the Fox series about a serial killer with a cult of admirers led by Kevin Bacon. Then came 'Conviction' (2016) alongside Hayley Atwell.

That same year he headlined something genuinely odd: 'Quantum Break', the game by Finnish studio Remedy that alternated play with live action episodes. Ashmore gave Jack Joyce his body, face and voice in both halves, and the experiment is remembered more for him than for the game.

In 2020 he dropped into 'The Boys' as Lamplighter, the former member of the Seven with a thoroughly grim past, across three episodes of the second season with Karl Urban and Antony Starr.

His steady job, though, is 'The Rookie'. He joined in 2018 as Wesley Evers, a lawyer who starts out taking the odd case and ends up part of the core of the ABC series fronted by Nathan Fillion. Eight seasons in he is still there, the most recent run having aired between January and May 2026.

Alongside that, February 2026 brought the thriller 'The Huntsman', a story of secrets and disappearances he shares with Elizabeth Mitchell, which played a handful of American screens before heading to video on demand.

Away from work he keeps things quiet. He married Dana Wasdin in July 2012, they have a son born in 2017, and neither of them courts the press, which is unusual enough in a career this long. He and Aaron have rarely shared a screen, each with his own list of shows, and both have got used to being credited with the other's work by now. At this point it comes with the job.
