Frankie (Harris Dickinson) is a 19 years old boy from Brooklyn who lives with her mother (Kate Hodge) and his little sister. Under the pressure of being the man of the house as his father is ill at the hospital, his mother wanting him to have a girlfriend and he finds himself in an existencial crisis where he doesn't know what does he want or who he is. He spends his miserable summer abusing of drugs, commiting crimes and webchatting with local man older than him. When the webchat sessions become more intense, he decides to meet him and have sex in the beach meanwhile he starts a relationship with Simone (Madeline Weinstein). This hard drama with LGTB characters won the award for best direction at Sundance Film Festival.

'Beach Rats' is Eliza Hittman's second film. She debuted a few years earlier with 'It felt like love'. Harris Dickinson the actor who plays Frankie in the film was actually too fit to play the role before filming began. "I got there and, without sounding arrogant, director Eliza Hittman told me that I was a bit too in shape".
