Synopsis

Anatomist Andrés Vesalio opened the human body for the first time five centuries ago, looking where no one had looked before. In 'De Humani Corporis Fabrica', the human body opens to cinema.

Human flesh is an extraordinary landscape discovered only through the gaze of others. Hospitals are laboratories who serve to connect bodies around the world. This documentary shows five hospitals in five neighborhoods in northern Paris, where we'll see different surgeries from the inside: a brain, an intestine, a prostate, a heart. The relationship of people to medicine, modern surgery, the malleability of human body and the vulnerability of flesh and life present in this film an uncomfortable reflection about humanity reduced to entities made of organic material.

Directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel, with photography by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel and Patrick Lindenmaier. Lucien Castaing-Taylor has directe 'Caniba', which explores the meaning of cannibalistic desire in human existence, winner in 2017 in the Venice Film Festival. He has also directed 'Leviathan', a documentary about the fishing industry in the Atlantic North, and 'Sweetgrass', about a group of shepherds who direct a herd of sheeps in the north-west of the United States.
