Plot
'The Bride!' is a U.S. horror film written, produced, and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. It is a loose adaptation of the 1935 film 'The Bride of Frankenstein'. Produced by First Love Films, the film began as a project for the streaming platform Netflix, which decided to abandon it after the actors' and writers' strike. Warner took over its acquisition and is preparing for its release in the United States on March 6, 2026, a few months after the debut of Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein', which Netflix successfully brought to fruition.
Set in 1930s Chicago, where Frankenstein is already a reality, the monster visits Dr. Euphronius's house to ask him to create a companion. The result is the creation of "the bride", formed after bringing a murdered woman back to life. The peculiar romance between these two creatures intertwines with the police investigation into the missing woman and the profound social changes of the time.
'The Bride!' stars Jessie Buckley as the bride, while Christian Bale is Frankenstein. Annette Bening plays Dr. Euphronious, and Peter Sarsgaard is the detective in charge of the investigation. The cast also includes, among others, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, Julianne Hough, and John Magaro.
Filmed in New York at Gyllenhaal's express wish (Netflix wanted to shoot in New Jersey for cost reasons, which was one of the reasons for the split between the platform and the project), the film ended up being completed with a budget of 80 million dollars compared to the 100 million that Netflix estimated for the project.
