Plot
'The Choral' is a British historical drama directed by Nicholas Hytner with a script by Alan Bennett. The film, produced by Head Gear Films and starring Ralph Fiennes, debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival before being released in the UK on November 7, 2025.
The film is set in 1916 in the fictional town of Ramsden, in Yorkshire, where World War I has ravaged the small municipality, calling up almost all adult men. This has left the town's choir at a minimum. Eager to continue, the local committee recruits new young members and hires a new teacher, Dr. Henry Guthrie, who has just returned from Germany.
The new group of teenagers must rehearse the new plays while struggling with the trauma caused by the War: fears and losses, as well as the imminent threat of conscription. A story of hope about the power that music can have in societies.
The film, which receives mixed reviews, stars Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms, Simon Russell Beale, and Jacob Dudman, along with Ralph Fiennes himself. Filmed in Yorkshire, it uses the village of Saltaire to represent the fictional town of Ramsden.
