Plot

Halle Bailey gets her feature-length debut in this role, where she plays young Ariel, a teenage mermaid with a beautiful voice who feels trapped in the ocean world and dreams of visiting the surface. To do so, she is even willing to make a trade with the evil witch Ursula, who, using her powerful magic, will turn her mermaid tail into human legs in exchange for her voice. Ariel will thus be able to fulfil her dream and discover the world of humans, where she has already noticed a young man, the good and handsome Prince Eric, with whom she will soon fall in love.

Rob Marshall brings to the big screen a live-action version of Hans Christian Andersen's literary classic, which already had its film adaptation in Disney's 1989 animated film. In this new instalment, written by David Magee with John DeLuca and Marshall himself, the musical essence of the original hit is maintained.

In addition to Bailey, the main cast of 'The Little Mermaid' includes Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Ariel's father, and Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula. Also featured are Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Lin-Manuel Miranda, SImone Ashley, Martina Laird, Jessica Alexande, and Emily Coates.

Trivia

Melissa McCarthy didn´t know she could sing

Melissa McCarthy had no idea she could actually sing before production of this film. She was coached by vocal coach Eric Vetro to prepare for her role as Ursula, and did all of her own singing in the film.

Ariel's hair

Halle Bailey joked that when she recreated the famous 'hair flip' scene (where Ariel swims to the surface and flips her hair after her human transformation), she nearly broke her neck because her wig was so heavy.

Maya Hawke

Maya Hawke had auditioned to play Ariel. She considers not landing the role to be the biggest disappointment of her career so far.
