The Singing Revolution

Directed by James Tusty · starring Linda Hunt

Synopsis

The word revolution is more associated with wars or coups that music, but need not always be so, between 1986 and 1991 Estonians chose the song as a weapon when they wanted to break free from years of Soviet occupation. During those years, they banned meetings patriotic songs were sung, sometimes these meetings were hundreds of thousands of people, thus starting the path to independence. "Young people, no political party, without politicians, we get together ... not only tens of thousands, but hundreds of thousands ... to remember and sing, and give this nation a new spirit," says Mart Laar, who was the post-Soviet prime minister of Estonia, besides being one of the leaders of the singing revolution in the film. This documentary tells the story of how the Estonian people overthrew the Soviet empire and regained their freedom peacefully.
