Plot
'The Wizard of the Kremlin' is a film directed by Olivier Assayas, based on the eponymous novel by Giuliano da Empoli, which offers an unsettling and contained look at the inner workings of power in contemporary Russia. Set in the years following the fall of the Soviet Union, the story unfolds through the figure of Vadim Baranov, a former artist and television producer who becomes the main political strategist of the new Russian regime.
Through Baranov's eyes, the film portrays the rise of Vladimir Putin —played by Jude Law— from an apparently gray position to becoming the face of an increasingly opaque and centralized power. Far from a conventional biographical account, the film focuses on the invisible mechanisms that shape modern politics: the control of the narrative, the manipulation of the media, fear as a tool, and the calculated construction of a public image.
As Baranov designs speeches, symbols, and strategies to maintain power, he also begins to confront the moral consequences of his work. His closeness to the Kremlin's core allows him to understand that true dominance is not exercised solely through force, but through carefully crafted narratives capable of rewriting reality and anesthetizing an entire society.
With a sober and reflective tone, 'The Wizard of the Kremlin' does not seek to explain Russia, but to observe how power thinks of itself, how it protects itself, and how it justifies itself. Assayas thus constructs an elegant and disturbing political thriller that reflects on the relationship between truth, propaganda, and individual responsibility in a world where information is the most dangerous tool.
