Synopsis

Larry is a deputy in a small Mississippi town and dreams of joining the FBI. So when he sees four men in dark suits bundle a blonde into a car outside the local diner, he doesn't think twice and "rescues" her from what he's sure is a kidnapping.

Trouble is, the men are federal agents and the woman, Madeleine, is a protected witness they're supposed to deliver to Chicago to testify in a huge corruption trial. Larry decides to see her there himself, certain this is his big chance to prove he's FBI material, but her FBI escort turns out to be a lot shadier than it first looked.

'Witless Protection' was the next live action vehicle for Larry the Cable Guy, best known to most audiences as the voice of Mater in 'Cars', following 'Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector' and 'Delta Farce'. Charles Robert Carner wrote and directed it, with Ivana Milicevic as Madeleine, Jenny McCarthy as Larry's girlfriend, Peter Stormare and Eric Roberts among the bad guys (Stormare with a British accent several critics singled out as gloriously awful) and a cameo from Joe Mantegna, who'd once taught Carner film. It was also Yaphet Kotto's final film.

Lionsgate released it in the US on 22 February 2008, and the critics weren't kind. It picked up three Razzie nominations, including Worst Actor for Larry, and its average across the 13 outlets collected on Movienco is 1.9 out of 10.

What the critics say average 1.9 from 13 outlets

  • 4.0 New York TimesMatt Zoller Seitz The slapstick and action set pieces are lame, and its performances range from competent to annoying. Read
  • 3.0 The Hollywood ReporterFrank Scheck At least a fright-wigged Joe Mantegna, delivering an execrable cameo as a whacked-out doctor, has a good excuse for his presence; the writer-director is one of his former film students.
  • 3.0 VarietyJohn Anderson If you need a GPS unit to find your own backside, you'll be laughing uproariously at Witless Protection, a movie that's far more interesting politically than dramatically -- or, God knows, comically.
