GOT TO GO

As if George R.R. Martin hadn't caused enough carnage already, the author is already talking about a spin-off showing even more casualties from the War of the Five Kings.

It seems that the 'Game of Thrones' universe is infinite... that is, until George R.R Martin decides to kill off every single character. The author of this legendary saga seems to have several aces up his sleeve, and has revealed some of his ideas about possible spin-offs surrounding the Westeros world.

George R.R. Martin

In an interview with The New York Times, the writer declared that he would like to do a series under the title 'Spear Carriers', which would follow minor characters. It would take place during the same timeframe as 'Game of Thrones', but would centre around more background characters, who are simply trying to live their lives and survive the War of the Five Kings.

"I haven't been able to convince HBO that this is a good idea yet, but I would actually love to do something like that. Have you ever seen 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead'? 'Hamlet' is going on in the background, but it's all about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern," he said. This 90s film to which he refers, like his own idea, focuses on unknown characters from the main story ("spear characters", as he describes them), who become the protagonists in their own tale.

"It wouldn't be following Dany, Tyrion and Jaime [...] it would be more like, "Here's a story about a guy in the City Watch; here's a story about a prostitute at one of Littlefinger's brothels; here's a story about a mummer who's in town to do juggling and tricks." And they all get caught up in the events. I think that kind of show would be a lot of fun to do. Maybe I'll be able to convince them to do it!"

Basically, Martin, who is known for his lack of mercy with the lives of his characters, wants to show more victims of the chaos and war which reigns throughout his novels. Will HBO give him another arena to play with?

The First Prequel

In a few months we will have to say goodbye to Jon, Daenerys, Sansa and the rest of the Westeros inhabitants forever, but all is not lost as we will then be able to enjoy more of the fantastical world in the 'Game of Thrones' prequel which HBO already has in the making. Although the title is still unknown, we do know that it is set thousands of years before the events of the main fiction, and two actors are already confirmed: Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse.

Everything seems to suggest that in this prequel we will see a universe which is completely distinct from what we have seen before. In the words of Martin himself, "There's no King's Landing. There's no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens and Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built".
