About the A Nightmare on Elm Street saga
'A Nightmare on Elm Street' is one of the great horror series of the eighties. Wes Craven wrote and directed 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' (1984), in which Freddy Krueger, a killer with a burnt face, a striped jumper and a bladed glove, murders the teenagers of a neighbourhood inside their dreams. It was also Johnny Depp's film debut.
Robert Englund played Freddy in every film of the original run, from 'Freddy's Revenge' (1985) to 'Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare' (1991), by way of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors' (1987), with Craven back as co-writer. Its success turned New Line Cinema into a major studio, nicknamed "the house that Freddy built".
Craven returned with 'Wes Craven's New Nightmare' (1994), a story about the making of the films themselves, and Freddy took on Jason, the killer from 'Friday the 13th', in 'Freddy vs. Jason' (2003). A remake followed in 2010, 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', with Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy.
