About the Lethal Weapon saga
'Lethal Weapon' (1987) defined the buddy-cop film: Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), a suicidal officer after his wife's death, and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), a veteran family man who keeps saying he is "too old for this". It was written by Shane Black and directed by Richard Donner, who made all four films in the series.
'Lethal Weapon' was a hit and 'Lethal Weapon 2' (1989) built on it, adding Joe Pesci as Leo Getz, the motor-mouthed accountant who became one of the family. 'Lethal Weapon 3' (1992) brought in Rene Russo as Sergeant Lorna Cole.
'Lethal Weapon 4' (1998) closed the series with Jet Li as the villain in his first Hollywood role, and Chris Rock in the cast. The chemistry between Gibson and Glover, a mix of action and comedy, set the template for the genre for a decade, and the story also became a TV series from 2016 to 2019.
