About the Star Trek saga
'Star Trek' was born on television in 1966, when Gene Roddenberry created the original series about the crew of the starship Enterprise, with Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and the Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy). It lasted only three seasons, but its fans, the Trekkies, turned it into one of science fiction's longest-lived franchises.
The move to cinema came with Robert Wise's 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' (1979), followed by 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' (1982), for many the best of all, and 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' and 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home', both directed by Nimoy himself. The crew of 'The Next Generation', with Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard, took over in films such as 'Star Trek: First Contact' (1996) and 'Star Trek: Nemesis' (2002).
J.J. Abrams rebooted the series with 'Star Trek' (2009), starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, the first film in the series to win an Oscar, for best makeup. It was followed by 'Star Trek Into Darkness' (2013) and 'Star Trek Beyond' (2016). In all, the saga runs to thirteen films and a dozen series.
